Adventure Island 3: The Lost Isles > System :
NES
> Description : All 8 worlds and 8 levels each have been altered. (with the exception of world 4-4 although most enemies have been changed) This is not meant to be a “hardtype” hack but later levels can be very challenging. All levels can be completed without any enhancements. (hammer, dinosaur etc.) However it is recommended that you save your items for later levels.

Note that it is possible to beat the first 15 levels without a continue, not really that hard, hehe. All levels have been hacked. Enemy Graphics have been given a facelift or totally changed. Graphics for just about everything else has been edited.
Castlevania Retold > System :
NES
> Description : Castlevania Retold is–as the name suggest–a retelling of the original NES Castlevania. I wanted to keep the original story intact (Many of the CV games are retellings of the first one, this is no different) but offer new levels and graphics, this is just that. All the levels have the same themes to them they originally had, but with new layouts and enemy placement, I also wanted to keep the classic feel to it, which is why I used mostly graphics from CV2 and 3. There are very few custom graphics in the hack, I’m not good with graphics at all, but I did make a new title screen using the new CV logo (Which Moonchile later enhanced) and enhanced some of the orignal sprits.
Castlevania: Chorus of Mysteries > System :
NES
> Description : 1476, Romania. A terrifying castle rises up from the mist. Along with the castle rose a dark powerful being named Count Dracula Vlad Tepes. A man named Trevor Belmont was fated to defeat the powerful vampire, aided by a witch named Sypha, Dracula’s own son Alucard, and a pirate named Grant DeNasty. Together the team traversed the dark halls of Castlevania, defeating the count and his countless minions. In 1777 a young child was born, and abandoned on a merchant ship with nothing but a headband with a mysterious crest, and the name Armund. The sailors raised the child on the high seas, and taught him the ways of being a sailor. Armund grew to be one of the greatest men that the merchant ship ever saw. Late 1797, word started to spread of the legends of Count Dracula, and his tyranny in the land of Romania. It was about that time, that Armund ran into an old Romanian man in Serbia. The old man knew a lot about the history of Count Dracula, and his reign of terror in Romania. The old man recognized the crest on Armund’s bandanna, and told him that it belonged to the DeNasty clan, and that his ancestor helped defeat Dracula. Armund decided to leave his life on the high seas to seek out more answers about his ancestry. Romania, 1800. It’s been 3 years since Alucard defeated his father in battle and has gone into eternal slumber. Armund’s search has taken him to the mountains of Romania, not far from the town of Jova. A mysterious letter hinted that he might be able to find answers in the castle of Count Olrox, a servant of Count Dracula’s. Armund set out of Olrox’s castle, armed only with an enchanted barbed rope from Serbia. This will truly be the greatest and most arduous adventure of Armund DeNasty’s life.

Chrono Trigger: Prophet's Guile > System :
SNES
> Description : Chrono Trigger: Prophet’s Guile is a fan game following the story of Magus’s rise to power in the Kingdom of Zeal after arriving in 12000 B.C. thanks to the distortion at his lair. In his bid to stop Lavos at the Ocean Palace, Magus must gain the trust of Queen Zeal and abolish all opposition. It’s about two regular Chrono Trigger chapters long, and full of surprises. The only casualty of the development process was a plan to resprite Magus as the Prophet, which would have involved exhaustive work.
Dragoon X Omega - Gold Edition > System :
NES
> Description : A nation just over a rebellion by their own psychic soldiers is attacked by an alien being in a giant star ship. The last one of the rebels that has not been executed is given a choice: Save the land of Amnethen or die at the hands of her former master, Lord Vin.

Makes you hungry for candy canes and kicking Elves. 😀
Dragoon X Omega II > System :
NES
> Description : A full scale hack of Final Fantasy, nothing remains but the core programming routines. It features all new graphics, music, levels, enemies, text, statistics and more. Think of it as a “Total Conversion” for the NES.
Final Fantasy Deluxe Edition > System :
NES
> Description : This is actually a very nice and imaginative hack of FF1. Difficulty is increased, but not ridiculously. There are new layouts and such. A very nice job by one of ZMD's own.
Super Mario Fantasy Adventure > System :
NES
> Description : Many years ago there was a very cool hack called “Mario Fantasy Adventure”, which was apparently originally made by Acmlm. However, while there was some awesome music and graphic work done on the hack, the hack was unfinished and the changes only lasted up until the first temple.
This hack continues the Mario Fantasy Adventure and changes the characters, monsters, and other graphics through the entire game. Every monster and weapon has been modified.
The character classes have also been completed (there were 2 Toads and 2 Peachs). You now pick from: Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Toad, Peach and Daisy and they all have corresponding class upgrades as well.
FF6 - Brave New World > System :
SNES
> Description : FF6 - Brave New World is a fairly complete overhaul of Final Fantasy VI, featuring… Character-based esper restrictions & new stat boosts that promote greater diversity and allow for customized development. New and reworked formulas which rescue everything that isn’t magic or magic evasion from the dump-stat heap. Rebalanced equipment, items, spells, and skills that aim to remove dead weight and give players more (and better) choices. A complete overhaul of enemies from their stats to their behavior to better challenge veteran players and newcomers alike. Tons of bugfixes, as well as remedies to many of the game’s more annoying aspects (such as rage hunting taking a lifetime). A new script that restores much of what was lost in translation and builds on existing plotlines and characterization. And much, much more, detailed in the Readme (particularly section 4).
Final Fantasy VI - The Eternal Crystals > System :
SNES
> Description : Version X is a new re-hack of the old "Eternal Crystals" hack (versions 9.08 and earlier). The other versions were built on top of one another, where this one was started from an original ROM and matched many of the aspects of the older versions. This is a completely playable hack from beginning to end. It maintains the BASIC structure of the original game, but is loaded with surprises. **Note: Using a save game (srm file) or savestate from another FF3 ROM will mess up this hack.
Ghosts'n Goblins - All Hallows Eve > System :
NES
> Description : Here is a hack for Ghosts’N Goblins for the NES system which changes the level layouts and adds some difficulty to the game.
Megaman in the Mushroom Kingdom > System :
NES
> Description : Dr. Wily finally concedes that Mega Man may be too much for his evil robotic creations. Determined to get the best of the blue bomber, Dr. Wily contacts another famous villian, Bowser! Having combined their forces, Dr Wily and Bowser unleash their new destructive creations upon the Mushroom Kingdom. After hearing news of Wily’s new plan, Mega Man decides to travel to the Mushroom Kingdom himself to stop Wily again. Mega Man now finds himself in a strange new world filled with obstacles and locales very foreign to him. Fearless, Mega Man presses on to Super Mario’s old stomping grounds to defeat these new foes. Mega Man in the MK is set in various classic Mario games. Including Super Mario Bros1, 2, 3 and World. Megaman faces off against Wily’s Bosses as well as Bowser’s minions. This being Super Mario’s World, he gladly helps out Mega Man by increasing his jumping power as well as outfitting the Blue Bomber with some of his old garbs.
Rockman 2000 > System :
NES
> Description : Kuwata’s first hack of Rockman (1). It features new levels, graphics, enemies, and even music. The levels are very challenging; some even have small puzzles in them. It should be noted this hack will not work with a Mega Man ROM, you need to patch a Rockman ROM.

Megaman 5 Time Attack > System :
NES
> Description : Mega Man 5 Time Attack drastically alters the setup of Mega Man 5 so that it is now a race against the clock rather than a battle against Wily. The scores are stored on a top10 list for each stage. Also added is an in-game menu which allows you to continue playing a stage, restart a stage, or return to the main menu. Definitely a great hack for Mega Man fans to get; it adds a ton of replay value to the game.
Metroid - Captive > System :
NES
> Description : This is a complete hack for the NES game Metroid in which you play once again as Samus who has been captured by the Space Pirates only to escape and achieve victory! The level layout has completely changed and the level graphics have all been changed as well.
Metroid Deluxe > System :
NES
> Description : This is a 100% complete patch: Most of the map was totally deleted so the game was built again from scratch. Items are moved, puzzles are changed, and there is no such thing as a dead end. It is hard both mentally and physically, but I avoided such design flaws as having to bomb arbitrary points in the floor or placing enemies so that you get smacked in the face on the way in or out of rooms. It’s essentially a brand new NES Metroid game. Also, minor text and graphics hacks were done, but mostly just for packaging purposes, (As in, the title screen was changed, mostly).
Samus: Mother Brain Returns > System :
NES
> Description : Samus’ suit is redesigned, all of the maps have been edited, title screen, mission text, credits, and item locations. None of the weapons or power ups were changed.

Ninja Gaiden evil edition > System :
NES
> Description : This hack change all levels in the game including bosses. It also adds new powers.
Pokemon: Blue Kaizo > System :
Gameboy
> Description : This is a far more challenging hack of Pokemon Blue, where you can obtain all 151 Pokemon in the First Generation. Numerous areas have been redesigned, many dungeons and routes are more treacherous than before. The default movesets are modified to ensure the pokemon become significant threats. The level curve has been estimated to be smooth. Wild Pokemon distribution is vastly improved, with levels fairly close to trainers. You can catch quite a variety of pokemon early on. All trade evolutions will evolve by level up. You can purchase ethers. Apart from Brock and Misty, and a couple of rival fights, all bosses will have full teams. Apart from giovanni, these will stick to their type themes with a wildcard in between. After koga, the trainer level curve varies a bit due to a fork in progression (such as going to silph co or seafoam islands), but the boss progression will be Giovanni, Sabrina, and Blaine. A good tip is to save rare candies, do not use them early on, as it becomes much harder to level up in the later stages. But once you beat blaine, you can catch some very high leveled pokemon right before victory road, and you can obtain psychic types. Victory road will be the most difficult dungeon in terms of battles, as a good 95% of them will have full teams of six, and the cooltrainers will be particularly deadly, with some of the best teams in gen 1. But if you make it past victory road, you can purchase super cheap rare candies to get to level 100. And it is essential you get to level 100, because the Elite Four will be the hardest part of the game. You can obtain legendary pokemon, as well as a select few rare and extremely powerful pokemon in the Unknown Dungeon. The newest update fixed some map issues, and added a new gameplay element: You can't use revives or max revives during battle, only outside of it. So if your pokemon faints, you can't revive it until the battle is over. There is an element of challenge involved with boss fights this time. Be sure to keep plenty of revives during dungeon trips.
Pokemon Crystal Kaizo > System :
Gameboy
> Description : This is a modded pokemon crysrtal hack, a direct sequel to Blue Kaizo where you can obtain all 251 pokemon throughout the game, although it is possible to actually SEE 252 pokemon. Though it will be a very difficult challenge because apart from a couple of rival fights, all major bosses will have a full team of six pokemon, all of which are better rosters than the original, and many have held items. Gym leaders will use specialty types, though as you progress, they start using wild cards that either counter your supereffective types, use attacks of their specialty type, or a mixture of both. This is because bosses will never use duplicate pokemon within their same team. In addition, all of them are shinies. As you get to the elite four, you will find these heavenly kings having pokemon above level 100, though not to ridiculously high extents, such as past level 127. You can find evolution stones in the goldenrod department store, and apart from using water stones on slowpoke, all trade evolutions evolve by level up. Espeon evolves from a sun stone, while umbreon evolves from a moon stone. From an odd egg, you can also obtain exclusively shiny pokemon from either starters, eevee, tyrogue, magby, elekid, smoochum, and dratini and larvitar. The maps also have been redesigned, and some can be a bit non-linear. There is a major update, during battle, you cannot use revives, max revives, or revival herbs. Only outside of battles, so if your pokemon faints, you can't use it until the battle is over.

Super Mario Kart Alternate Tracks > System :
SNES
> Description : Every track has been replaced by one I’ve created completely myself, including the Battle Mode courses. I’ve tried to avoid putting in overly complicated or silly courses like some hacks of this game have, but at the same time I’ve snuck in a couple of new ideas. The AI works in all courses, and offers a challenge, but is far from unbeatable.
Super Mario Kart: Pro Edition > System :
SNES
> Description : This hack is a complete remake of SMK, featuring 20 new tracks. The AI also works, meaning you’ll have to work for that first place in GP mode. For when you’re feeling more like hitting your friends with shells and bananas, there’s also 4 new battle mode courses for you and your friends to determine who is the champion of battle once and for all.
Super Mario Land Extra > System :
Gameboy
> Description : I went to Super Mario Land section for Gameboy to see Pokemon in the whole section. Okay, maybe one them has different levels. Nope. Which is where Super Mario Land Extra comes in. Featuring challenging new levels! Animation, Audio & Sprites are still the same. All I can say is, "Watch your step!" Version 2.8 I had help from F.M. After you beat this game when it will say "Idea: F.M." So you don't give me full credit for designing this game.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

ROM Hacks Selection Process
You are wondering why your hack has not been added to the list or you would like to know more about the selection process? You are invited to discuss that topic on the Forums.
Of course, the selection process for the archive is very arbitrary and subject to debate, but there is not as much grey zones as it may first seem. It’s based mostly on factors like fairness, (can’t be punished for playing well, can’t get stuck, can’t softlock without knowing…), quality of the design, quantity of changes and difficulty balance. The more the hack feels like a licenced game, the most likely it is to be added to the site, but there are also obvious exceptions to that. Remz Lab’s ROM Hacks will be used as reference on what are the minimum requirements for hacks to be added and Acmlm’s ROM Hacks will be used to demonstrate how a really good hack can be added regardless of the standard requirements. People should be able to pick any given hack in the list and play it to the end like a regular licenced game. If you would like to add any suggestion for what you think would make a good high quality standard, or would like to submit a link to a high quality hack, feel free to contrubute!
